Farmers' Market has a "WOW" opening day

Farmers' Market has a "WOW" opening day

As Holt Farmers’ Market manager Chuck Grinnell often says, “It’s always sunny inside the Market!” Obviously people have been listening, because more than 500 visitors braved sprinkles and un-spring-like temperatures to come in and check out opening day.

Fresh produce available at the Market opener included asparagus, rhubarb, potatoes, lettuce (hot house) and baby spinach (hot house). There were also baked goods (including gluten-free products), eggs, cheese, butter, maple syrup and free-range meats along with various craft items.

The movie "Fresh"––a documentary about the importance of eating fresh, locally-produced food–– played at 9:00 a.m. and again at 10:00 a.m. The folk band Gossip in the Forest performed between 11:00 and 1:00 and were a huge hit with visitors and vendors alike. Chuck Grinnell plans to bring in more live entertainment throughout the season and “make every Saturday an event.”

Also new this year: the Holt Farmers’ Market is now accepting payment by credit card, debit card and EBT (electronic bank transfer).

If you’re a fan of the Holt Farmers’ Market, please show your support by casting a vote in the America's Favorite Farm Market competition. Voting begins June 1 at www.farmland.org/vote and runs through August 31. Four markets from across the U.S.––one each in the small, medium, large and boutique-sized market categories–-will earn the title of America's Favorite Farm Market for 2011. Winners will be featured on a leading food site, Epicurious.com, and be honored at local celebrations where they will receive prize packages from American Farmland Trust and its partners. The contest is part of American Farmland Trust's "No Farms No Food" campaign. The Flint Farmers’ Market won this award in 2009.

Its clear that the Holt Farmers’ Market has become a place where friends and neighbors gather, shop for local produce and homemade goodies, learn a little about farming and gardening, and enjoy a simple cup of coffee together. Please stop in and join us! The Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. For additional information, visit holtfarmersmarket.org.
